Can you hear it? It’s coming….
Despite the retail stores trying to convince me otherwise, the first of December marks the start of the Christmas season in our household. Time to dust off the ornaments, trim the tree, and bask in the lights, music, and holiday cheer that we wait excitedly for all year long.
The start of this season also means that my social media newsfeeds are filled with baked goods in every shape, size, and colour. You can run but you can’t hide from the bake exchanges, cookie swaps, and general sharing of sugary snacks that last from now until New Years resolutions roll around.
My favorite Christmas baked good to make and share with others is the Magic Cookie Bar that my mom always makes at Christmas time. For me, any dessert in the ‘slice’ category brings about memories of matrimonial cake, or desserts with strange dried fruits and gelatinous mounds hidden inside, circa the church brunches of my childhood or post-holiday baking my grandma would attempt to give us. You know….the stuff that’s left when all the good desserts have been devoured.
This is not that kind of slice.
This slice is a rockstar and will become a fast favourite for any bake exchanges you need to prepare for or any company that shows up at your house.
1/2 C margarine or butter 1 C chocolate chips
1 1/2 cups graham cracker crumbs 1 C flaked coconut
1 can sweetened condensed milk 1 C chopped nuts (I use walnuts)
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F (325 degrees for a glass dish).
In a 9×13 inch baking pan, melt margarine in oven.
Sprinkle crumbs over the margarine, then spread them out with a fork until you have a layer covering the base of the pan.
