Every month, Like Mother Like Daughter brings its readers 3 generations of favourites. These include things we read/watched/purchased/listened to….you get the idea. Our exclusive list of panellists includes my mom, my two year old daughter (she has very discerning tastes….) and myself. We hope you enjoy!
My Mom`s Picks
Favourite Read: Finding Your Way in a Wild New World by Martha Beck – With my 2016 theme of “Discover the Magic”…this book chose me for my favourite February read. Martha mesmerized me with her insights into discovering a deeper connection with our self and all that surrounds us. Complete with metaphors, and meditations and exercises, she has opened the doors wider to this magical experience we call Life:)
Favourite TV show: American Idol the 15th and Final Season – I love music….and I love being inspired by the amazing talent of these aspiring new artists. The panel of judges are compassionate encouragers…a breath of fresh air!
Favourite Meal Out: “Taste of the Islands” at Rainforest Cafe – The sign of a good meal for me is if tears come when I savour something delectable. My meal at the Rainforest Cafe was THAT good! Add in the sound effects of rain falling, lightening flashing, and elephants trumpeting…it was magical!
Favourite New Recipe: Spaghetti Squash Chow Mein – All Vegetable guilt-free deliciousness! Find the recipe here!
The Love month has been magical!
My Daughter`s Picks
Favourite Read: I`ve been trying to introduce my daughter to some non-traditional children`s books, and this is one of the first of this type of books that I read to her. Though she may not understand all of the underlying messages in the book, the story is engaging and she really enjoys it. I got the chance to write about non-traditional children`s books for the blog This Mom Loves this month, and my post has other book recommendations of this nature. Bonus: I was able to get most of the books from my public library. Check out the full post here!
Favourite Craft: My daughter Miss K does not get the opportunity to do many crafts because I am a craft-hating mother. This month, every time I went on Pinterest I was inundated with Valentine`s Day craft ideas that I knew would not work in our house because I am not crafty enough to pull any of that stuff off successfully. Thankfully, I have friends who can give me practical ideas, and such was the case when Miss K and I attempted this Valentine`s Day craft together. It was so much fun, and all the recipients loved their personalized Valentine`s Day cards. The beauty of this craft is that by switching the paint colours we can do this for any occasion! Note to family: You will be getting this craft again.
Favourite TV Guilty Pleasure: February 26th marked the release of a truly epic spin-off series. Fuller House, the spin-off to the beloved series Full House dropped courtesy of Netflix and a generation of 80s and 90s children binge-watched the 13 episodes to their hearts content. I love the show but I know that it is getting mixed reviews due to some not-so-family-friendly moments, and the cringe-worthy flashbacks (which for the record I love). You can`t compete with the original, but I enjoyed their attempt to and I hope a season two is in the works. I got to write a piece for UrbanMommies on the release…check it out here!
Favourite Read: The word Feminism seems to be on the tip of a lot of people`s tongues lately, and Emma Watson joined this conversation by starting a feminist book club called Our Shared Shelf (you can find the book club on Goodreads). Her first book club choice was My Life on the Road by Gloria Steinem which I happened to be reading at the time, and which I thoroughly enjoyed. In the book, Gloria Steinem talks of her travels on the road and the lessons she has learned along the way. She imparts her wisdom in such a way that it reads like the most engaging history lesson on the women`s movement that I have ever read. The people she has met in her travels and the lives she has subsequently touched is deeply inspiring. Since I finished the book Gloria has made headlines a number of times, forever solidifying her bad ass feminist status in my heart.
Favourite Internet Find: Have you guys heard about the YouTube series called Kids On? Well now you have and I encourage you to go watch it immediately after you finish reading this post. Host Dave Keystone asks kids for advice to adult problems, primarily relationship problems, and the kids give Dave advice. Don`t miss the Text or Call episode, it`s worth the 4.5 minutes of your time.
Favourite Movie: My hubs and I were able to sneak away for an early Valentine`s date and we were both SO excited to take in a non-animated non-G-rated movie. We chose Concussion starring Will Smith and we were not disappointed. This movie has something for everyone: a fascinating storyline based on true events, a delightfully unexpected love story, and a lil bit of football. Win-Win-Win.
We had a great Love month!
