Every few months, Like Mother Like Daughter brings its readers three generations of favourites. These include things we read/watched/purchased/listened to….you get the idea. Our exclusive list of panellists includes my mom, my two year old daughter (she has very discerning tastes….) and myself. We hope you enjoy!
Is anyone else in complete denial that it’s September? I am in awe at the speed for which time seems to be passing, yet here we are, heading full steam ahead into fall.
Before we bust out our cozy sweaters and begin ordering pumpkin spice lattes, let’s take a look back at summer 2016, and some of the best things we read, watched, and listened to.
My Mom’s Picks
Favourite Read: “The Little Paris Bookshop” by Nina George. The imagination of Nina George took me on an idyllic journey that was inspired by insights into love and loss. A “literary apothecary”…hmmm…loved it!
Favourite Meal: Bbq spice-rubbed chicken, chickpea and avocado salad, quinoa salad, broccoli salad….it was all SO delicious and I can’t decide if it was the savoury tastes, or the great company. I think both.
Favourite Moments: Summertime is ripe with amazing moments, yet there are some that stand out. The moment I picked up my granddaughter at her uncle’s wedding dance and together we danced with abandon. Another moment that stands out was seeing the look in my daughter and her husband’s eyes as they ran down the airport steps to greet and embrace their babies after a trip away. Pure joy!
My Daughter’s Picks
Favourite App: “Kidloland” available for purchase on Itunes, Google Play, and Amazon, has captivated the attention of my toddler from the moment I first pressed ‘play’. I continue to be impressed with the amount of songs and activities available on this app, and I especially like the puzzles and games that are as educational as they are entertaining. Check out my full review of the app here!
Favourite TV Show: “Beat Bugs” is a new Netflix original series and it is fan-freaking-tastic. The episodes, which are half an hour in length, each feature various Beatles songs that help to facilitate the moral of the story. For once, parents won’t be cringing when the songs playing repeatedly in their children’s shows become an earworm for the rest of the day.
Favourite Activity: “Mess-Free Painting” by Crayola. Although not entirely mess-free (or perhaps my child is more prone to creating disaster than her same-age peers) this activity was a great hands-on creative craft that engaged my two-year old for at least half an hour of screen-free fun. That’s a win-win in my book.
Favourite Summer Beverage: This summer, I discovered the deliciousness that is Prosecco. I don’t know what kind of rock I’ve been living under, but I had never tried this sparkly bevvy and once I did it quickly became my fav.
Favourite Read: I read a LOT of really good books this summer, but the one that stuck with me was Me Before You by JoJo Moyes. The topic that Moyes tackles in this novel is controversial to say the least, and at points the characters are infuriating. But the characters, the plot, and the ending stayed with me long after I turned the last page. I hope the sequel is as good as it’s predecessor, and I have very high hopes for the movie.
Favourite Movie: Words cannot express how much I loved the movie Bad Moms, which was released in July. It was everything I love in a movie: predictable love story, amazing cast, and humour. Well….dirty humour. And mom humour. And booze humour. Hilarious and well worth the price of admission, popcorn, chocolate, and carefully concealed libations.

Now that we have reviewed summer…I’m ready for my pumpkin spice latte.
